Zack Thompson

In his own words

I have an old school attitude, amidst a new school
mentality. I started out as one of the young guns and now it’s 20 years later. I’ve put in my dues and I feel like I’ve done it the right way. I like to fish my strengths, but I will let the fish tell me what is going on. I am passionate about the sport and when you watch me, you’ll see me wear my emotions on my sleeve. I will give everything I have out there and leave it on the water. I’m really looking forward to the inaugural year of APEX and expanding formats on the West Coast, which is a unique scene that has a lot of growth potential. APEX will help shape the West and forge a new identity for a western market.

2-time Forrest Wood Cup qualifier, Bassmaster Open champion, FLW Angler of the Year title

Behind the Angler

Zack’s first fishing trip was with his dad in elementary school. He vividly remembers a day catching shiners on an Alameda pier. After that experience, he wanted to fish every day that he possibly could. After watching an episode of Bassmaster on TV, Zack was intrigued by the guys that fished professionally. He grew up fishing with current MLF pro Fred Roumbanis. In college, Roumbanis introduced him to tournament fishing and Zack’s career progressed from there. He has won several events on the California Delta and Clearlake with runner up finishes at Lake Shasta and Lake Havasu.

With two top tens in the 2021 APEX season and qualifying for 2021 and 2022 APEX Championship he is ready to hit the water in 2023 ready to light it up.

In the Boat

Zack calls himself a power fisherman, preferring to throw reaction baits, bladed jigs, heavy flipping rigs and crankbaits. His first pick for a flip rig is a one-ounce weight and a creature bait. His lockers are stocked with St. Croix Rods. “The Legend Tournament Bass series is the most amazing rod I have ever had in my hands”.  Partnering with St. Croix has been a great fit. “They build rods for catching fish and take customer feedback seriously, and they are all made in the USA!”
