Johnny Johnson

Lakeside, Ariz.

In his own words

I am more of a finesse fisherman. I used to call myself Mr. Spinnerbait. I still love doing that; but there’s something about finessing those fish, especially here in Arizona, where it is so tough. That’s how I won the U.S. Open – with a dropshot. That was a rollercoaster for sure and a goal I had for a lot of years. I have a lot of great highlights in my life. I played in my dad’s band since I was 10 and got to follow a music career. I’ve had my Fishing with Johnny Johnson TV show for 25 years. That’s a long life for TV. I retired from music about 10 years ago. My last gig was at Mandalay Bay in Vegas. In my life, I’ve got to live two of my dreams – music and fishing. It’s been incredible. My life has been a dream come true.

Highlights

Starring in the Fishing with Johnny Johnson TV show from 1997 to present, 2016 Lake Mead U.S. Open champion

Behind the Angler

Johnny grew up fishing the White Mountains of Arizona. He recalls walking the banks for perch and bass when he was as young as seven-years-old. His competitive fishing years started as a teen in the White Mountain Bass Club, with his dad as his partner. His first boat followed shortly after. Several of Johnny’s favorite memories come from his time in the White Mountain Bass Club, including their Rookie Team of the Year award, and a win against a fellow White Mountain Bass Club duo that had been “giving them a beatin’ for a long time”. Team tournaments evolved into Pro/Ams and that led to a career in the fishing industry.

In the Boat

Arizona Custom Bait worms, Yamamoto Senkos and dropshot gear top the list for Johnny’s preferred bass catching tools. Contrary to popular belief, he also carries an A-rig.
